"The Orange County Justice Initiative proudly announces our co-sponsorship of the "Advancing Ethnic Studies Action Act of 2026."

 As a BIPOC youth-empowered organization dedicated to dismantling systemic racial disparities, challenging economic and legislative barriers, and safeguarding the human rights of our community's most marginalized individuals, we recognize the transformative power of ethnic studies in building a more just and inclusive society.

This legislation responds to decades of advocacy from students of color and community leaders who have called for educational spaces that reflect the diverse histories, experiences, and contributions of Native American, African American, Asian American, and Latina/Latino American communities. 

The Act's requirement for California State University undergraduates to complete both lower and upper division ethnic studies courses, and for graduate students to engage in ethnic studies coursework, represents a critical step toward ensuring that higher education in our state is responsive to the needs of a multiracial democracy.

Research consistently demonstrates that ethnic studies courses benefit all students-improving academic engagement, fostering cross-cultural understanding, and equipping graduates to become responsible and constructive citizens. By mandating comprehensive ethnic studies education, this Act will help prepare future leaders to challenge injustice and uphold equity throughout California.
